Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day

You don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. This is a holiday that offers lots of ways to make time with your kids fun and meaningful. You can celebrate by creating some delicious treats and you can make some great decorations and craft items.

St. Patrick’s Day Treats

Let’s start with some St. Patrick’s Day treat ideas. One of the very simple treat ideas for this holiday is cookies that are decorated in green. Green M&Ms can be pressed into freshly baked cookies or you can add green frosting or other decorations. You can do the same with brownies and cakes.

Miniature pretzels can be perfect for creating special treats for any holiday. Just spread a sheet of wax paper to add your pretzels to. Then melt white or milk chocolate in the microwave. Drop a teaspoonful of chocolate onto each pretzel – then decorate using 3 green M&Ms for each pretzel – which now becomes shamrocks. A bit of green icing be used to create a ‘stem’. The same process can be used to create treats for other times of the year – just use appropriately colored M&Ms and skip the stem!

Cool Drinks For St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick ’s Day drinks include everything from lime-flavored Kool-Aid to green smoothies and shakes. Get creative – add vanilla ice cream, milk and a few drops of green food color to your blender – just blend and serve! You might also want to consider serving up a green punch and add some scoops of green sherbet for interest. Top your St. Patrick’s Day drinks off with a bit of whipped cream and some green sprinkles.

Craft Project For St. Patrick’s Day

Shamrocks and leprechauns are the traditional icons used for St. Patrick’s Day decorations. As our image indicates, St. Patrick’s Day is often associated with good luck or even with good fortune. After all, everyone knows that leprechauns love gold and jewels. Leprechauns are small and they visit our homes on St. Patrick’s Day.

With this, trapping a leprechaun can offer the promise of something exciting. It should be remembered that leprechauns are clever – they can always escape from traps. But if your trap is one they like, the leprechaun(s) will leave behind something special for you. This could be candy, money, or other items. Parents should be warned, just as kids look for ways to ensure they receive real letters from Santa – they will also want to know if the item left really came from leprechauns.

Obviously, creating a leprechaun trap can be a lot of fun – and there are lots of ways to do this. One way is to use a Quaker Oats box. Of course, leprechauns like the color green, and they like rainbows and pots of gold. Keeping those things in mind the box should be decorated accordingly. Placing the box on top of a paper plate that has been decorated in a similar manner will help make box look like a leprechaun hat. The top of the ‘hat’ is the trap.

You can cut a few slits from the outside rim of the lid to the center. This ensures that if a leprechaun walks across the lid he will ‘fall in’ to the trap. You should add something to the box top that will lure leprechauns in. This could be a small trinket, candy, or other items. You can even make a ladder to help them scale the side of the hat (box). Just glue some twigs together to create a ladder.

The hardest part about celebrating St. Patrick’s Day is deciding which option(s) you will go with. All we can say is, choose wisely – best of luck!

Have Your Trail Mix Your Way!

Have Your Trail Mix Your Way!

Now days you can buy various kinds of Trail Mix at your favorite grocery store. However, this limits you to choosing from what is available. The reality is, you can create delicious trail mix treats very easily. And when you make it yourself you get to choose exactly what goes in. In other words, you can have your trail mix your way!

Typical Trail Mix Ingredients

Although there is not a right or wrong ‘mix’, the typical ingredient choices include nuts, seeds, dried fruit, grains, sweets and seasonings. Obviously, within these choices you can go very healthy or create a mix that is heavy on calories and fat content.

Cooked, Roasted or Raw

Some people prefer a ‘cooked’ mix. That is, the sweets, such as chocolate, peanut butter, or butterscotch chips may be melted and combined with the dry ingredients. Nuts and other ingredients can be roasted or added raw.

Mix It Up

Don’t be afraid to experiment. Seasonings and spices can make even an ordinary Trail Mix more exciting to eat. You can create a sweet mix, a salty and sweet mix, a spicy mix, or whatever sounds good to you. Add in some surprises – for instance, you could add a few wasabi peas or M&Ms. These ingredients can make the mix more interesting and fun to eat.

Dyed Rice – Instead Of Glitter

Dyed Rice – Instead Of Glitter

If you read this blog on a regular basis you have probably seen several posts that mention a craft box. A well-stocked craft box can help keep your kids busy – even when they’ve been snowed in for days! The best part is, you can stock your craft box with things you already have. For instance, dyed rice is a perfect alternative to glitter.

Uncooked rice can be colored with food coloring and used to create and decorate various types of craft projects. For instance, a simple picture can be outlined on poster board and filled in with the colored rice. This can be much more fun than using crayons or markers!

You can also use the dyed rice to create seasonal decorations. For example, a heart shape cut out of poster board can be generously covered with colored rice to create a one-of-a-kind Valentine’s decoration.
Here’s how to dye uncooked rice:

What You Need

  • ¼ cup Rubbing Alcohol or White Vinegar
  • 2/3 cup Uncooked Rice
  • Gallon Size Zip-Lock Bag or Large Jar
  • Food Coloring
  • Wax Paper or Folded Newspaper

How To Dye Rice

  • Add the rubbing alcohol or white vinegar to your bag or jar. Add 3 or 4 drops of the food coloring and mix.
  • Pour in the rice.
  • Seal the bag or jar and shake until rice is evenly covered.
  • Allow the content to sit for 5 – 10 minutes.
  • Spread the rice out on the wax paper or newspaper and wait until it is dry before using. This should take about 30 – 60 minutes, but if the rice is soaked it can take up to 24 hours.

When ready the dyed rice can easily be added to craft projects. Just cover the item in glue and apply the rice just as you would glitter.

This blog offers information about everything from real letters from Santa to craft ideas, recipes, and much more.

Clear Out The Clutter!

Clear Out The Clutter!

A clutter-free space creates feelings of peacefulness and relaxation - great feelings to have in your own home!

Now that the holiday season is over you are probably looking forward to a new year with a fresh start on things. And ideally, at least for most people, that includes having a goal of being organized and having some control over your time. One way to ensure that will happen is to clear out the clutter.

When you get clutter under control you have an easier time when it comes to being organized and keeping things tidy. Ultimately this will have a positive impact on your time management. For example, you won’t waste time ‘looking’ for the things you need or want – instead, you will know exactly where to find them. In addition, because there is less clutter, your home will feel cleaner and more spacious – and it will be easier to keep it neat and tidy. In the end this will also help you feel more relaxed, comfortable and less stressed.

The Basics

Clearing out clutter sounds simple (and it can be), but there are underlying issues that must be dealt with. First of all, you probably have some emotional attachments to some of the things that are ‘cluttering’ your space. If that is the case careful consideration will be required during the de-cluttering process.

You may want to create bins for things you want to keep, things you are ready to part with, and things you are not sure about. Obviously, you may be able to throw away some things, and sell or give away others.

How to Start

De-cluttering is a top priority but you should also take a look at the furnishings in your home. Convenient and attractive storage solutions are essential. Now days you can find everything from coat racks and shelving units to storage bins and benches with built-in storage at your local department store. Take advantage of these easy solutions!

Having a place to store items but keeps them out of the way while also keeping them within easy access is essential. Everyone has treasured items they love. And in some cases it is these very things that cause or add to a cluttered look. Even so, that does not mean you want to get rid of those items. The solution is to find a way to store or display them that suits you.

Kid Stuff

Whether it’s toys, books or model airplanes, kids have lots of stuff. Find attractive ways to store or display these items. Simple solutions are available. For instance, a sturdy shoe box can be covered with fabric or decorative paper to create nice-looking storage for small toys and other items.

Label It

Get in the habit of being organized in whatever you do. One way to do this is to label things. This can be especially important when you are storing items. If you are not sure if something is worth keeping but you are not quite ready to part with it – create an intermediate storage solution – label the container or item, and then check back in 6 months or up to 12 months. At that time it should be easier to make a decision about whether the item should stay or go. If you decide to keep it you should look for a long-term storage or display solution.

After you have de-cluttered your home it will be a more vibrant space. This fresh new organized space just might inspire you to make other improvements!

Quick Ideas For Thanksgiving Day Leftovers

Quick Ideas For Thanksgiving Day Leftovers

If you are like most people, right about now you have more Thanksgiving Day leftovers than you ever wanted. After all, eating the same foods – even if they are delicious foods – can get old after the second day. So what do you do with all those leftovers? We’re offering up some ideas…

Leftover Delights:

Sandwiches – You can make turkey sandwiches with the meat as is or you can make turkey salad (made just as you would make a chicken or tuna salad- get as creative as you like!).

Turkey Soup – Make this just like you would make a traditional chicken soup. You can turn it into a turkey vegetable soup or turkey noodle soup.

Turkey Pot Pie – All you need is 2 pie shells and the contents (just combine cubed turkey, thawed frozen vegetables, diced onions, cream of chicken soup & a small amount of milk). Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees – fill first pie shell with contents, then add the second pie shell to create the top. Poke a few holes in the top of your pie and bake for about 40 – 45 minutes.

Turkey Tetrazzini – Line a 13x9 inch prepared pan with cooked egg noodles. In a large skillet sauté 6 ounces of sliced mushrooms; then mix in 2 cups diced turkey, 1 can condensed cream of celery soup, 1 cup sour cream, and small amount of salt and pepper. Spread mixture over noodles. Top off with a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese – bake at 350 degrees for about 20 – 25 minutes.

Mashed Potato Pancakes – just add a beaten egg to 2 cups of leftover mashed potatoes. You can add shredded cheese, sugar, salt, or even add shredded vegetables. Fry pancakes in butter and enjoy!

Thanksgiving Day Casserole – This single dish is a great way to use up all or most of your leftovers. Add ingredients in layers – start with turkey, then add stuffing, followed by a layer of vegetables (whatever you might have leftover); next you can add a layer of shredded cheese or if you like and have it on hand, you can add a layer of cranberry sauce – mashed potatoes make the perfect final topping. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes.

Before You Give That Puppy As A Christmas Gift…

Before You Give That Puppy As A Christmas Gift…

Who can resist an adorable little puppy? It really doesn’t matter what time of year it is, puppies just seem to have a way of melting your heart and making you love them. It’s not surprising that they are often thought of as the perfect gift. But before you decide to give a puppy as a Christmas gift there are some things you should consider. Actually, there are lots of things to consider – keep reading…

Puppies are irresistible - but it's important that every puppy goes to a forever home!

Does the Recipient Share Your Love?

For those of us that are dog lovers it can be difficult to imagine living without our furry friends. And when we see a friend or loved one that doesn’t have a dog we naturally want to help out – we want them to enjoy life with a dog. But as surprising as it may be, not everyone wants dogs. In fact, some people don’t even like them!

So one of the most important considerations is finding out how the intended dog-owner feels about having a dog. And not just dogs in general, but you should ask about types of dogs. For instance, some people only want small lap dogs and others prefer larger dogs and some may only want a breed that can be trained to do certain tasks or that doesn’t shed.

Is Christmas the Best Time?

Another huge consideration is timing. Christmas is already a busy time of year. A new pet needs a lot of attention. When you give a pet during the holiday season, in many cases you are taking a risk. Most people have holiday events to attend and friends and family members are stopping by. Chances are that the recipient will not have as much time as he/she would like to spend with the new pet – time that will make the dog feel at home and welcome.

In many ways this is unfair to both the dog and the new owner.

Stressful Time of Year

The holiday season is a stressful time of year. This is largely due to the many things that we try to accomplish in such a short amount of time. If we add a new pet into the mix that stress load can be multiplied. In addition, a new pet will be stressed when she first arrives at her new home. This can result in problematic behaviors that must be dealt with, which again, adds to the chaos of the moment.

The Best Gift of All

But even after reading all these considerations and cautions – although there is truth in them – if you are a dog lover, I’m sure you will agree that a new dog or puppy can be the best gift of all. Taking the time from the craziness of the holiday rush to spend some quiet time relaxing and getting to know a new pet can be soothing and it can create a sense of serenity. As our nerves are calmed and we feel less stressed we can more easily deal with the other issues related to the holiday season. So the thing is, for the right person, a dog or puppy can be an awesome gift – just do your homework before you decide to give a pet as a gift. The goal is that the pet will end up in a forever home!

Create Your Own Holiday Shoes

Create Your Own Holiday Shoes

Looking festive at holiday events is important, but it can also get expensive. Fortunately, with a little creativity, you can find lots of ways to save money on your holiday fashions and still look great. In fact, you can create your own, one of a kind holiday shoes. Want shoes that sparkle and shine like Dorothy’s in the Wizard of Oz? It’s very possible and the best is, it’s easy! Just follow along with these simple instructions.

Everyone wants to look great during the holiday season – DIY designs are a fun way to save money and give you a one-of-a-kind look; dd some sparkle to your old heels with glitter!

Getting Started

Gather one or more pairs of old pumps or high heels. A pair that is scuffed up will work just fine. All you really need to ensure is that the shoes fit and the soles are intact. You will be covering the outside with glitter. That’s where the sparkle will come from.

If you don’t have an old pair of shoes to use you can visit a second-hand shop and pick up a pair or two for a few bucks. After all, you might want to have a red glitter pair and another pair in gold or black.

The idea is to get creative and have fun with the project. You won’t be investing very much money and the craft project itself is fun.

Preparation:

This project can get messy so it is a good idea to create a work space by spreading newspaper on a flat working surface. The newspaper will ‘catch’ the overflow of glitter, which makes it easy to funnel it back into the container.

Things You Need

  • ·         Shoes
  • ·         Glitter
  • ·         Mod Podge
  • ·         Small Paint Brush
  • ·         Newspaper
  • ·         Painter’s Tape
  • ·         Scissors
  • ·         Ribbon (optional)
  • ·         Clear Spray Sealant
  • ·         Super Glue (optional)

Instructions:

Decide on a design for your shoes. You can cover the shoes completely in a single color of glitter or you may choose to create a pattern effect – that is, you might want the toes and heels of the shoes to be red and the rest to be black. You are the fashion designer!

If you choose to use a pattern you should use the painter’s tape to section the different areas off. It’s also a good idea to line the inside of your shoe with newspaper – this will help prevent glitter and the sealant from covering the inside your shoe.

Use the paint brush to cover the shoe or chosen section in Mod Podge. Complete one section, then you can do another.

Please note: If you want to add a bow made of ribbon at the back of the heel you should leave a space uncovered – this is where you will apply super glue to attach the bow. It is advisable to add a stitch or two through the bow to ensure that it will stay tied. You may also want to use a lighter to slightly heat the ribbon edges. This will prevent the ribbon from fraying.

After your shoes are completely covered in glitter you should take them outdoors to spray them with the sealant. Give them two generous coats.

Now is the time to add the final touch – the bow at the back of the heel if desired. Next – it’s time for you to step out in style!

Debbie Allen loves to write about DIY projects that help others save money and have fun. She believes simple Christmas traditions, like letters from Santa are the most meaningful ones.

When You Have To Celebrate Christmas Away From Home…

When You Have To Celebrate Christmas Away From Home…

Christmas is the time when we all want to be close to the people we love the most. Many of us travel hundreds or even thousands of miles to make that happen. But even with our best efforts, sometimes life happens and because of circumstances out of our control we simply cannot be where we want to be during the holiday season. This post offers tips to make your holiday better when you have to celebrate Christmas away from home.

Make Christmas special - no matter where you are!

Keep The Spirit Alive

Regardless of where you are or who you are with, you can make the holiday more meaningful if you keep the spirit of giving alive. Make it a goal to make someone else’s day better in some way.

Get Close To Being There

Maybe you can’t be there to enjoy all the delicious foods or to rip open gifts during the early Christmas morning mayhem, but that shouldn’t stop you from making a connection via phone or Internet. At least you can see and feel the joy in some way through the miles – it’s not the same but it is better than nothing at all.

Volunteer

No matter where you are there is some agency or community that could use some help. Volunteer some of your time. You will be welcomed and you will feel like you are a part of a group or cause. Your options are varied; for instance, you could contact any local homeless shelters, soup kitchens or nursing homes or assisted living communities.
You might also be able to work with organizations that deliver food, gifts, or just spend time with shut-ins. Check with local community services for ideas.

Adopt Someone

You can adopt a child, a senior citizen, or an entire family to care about during the holiday season. This gives you someone (or a group of people) to get to know and love in a very special way. There’s a good chance that this person (these people) will become important to you for the long term!

Attend Church

Even if you don’t usually attend church, the holiday season is a great time to ‘visit’ a church – it gives you an opportunity to get to know others and Christmas church services are always special. Most churches have special services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Postpone Christmas Celebrations

Keeping yourself busy with these activities can ‘get you through’ the holidays – then you can celebrate Christmas in your traditional fashion when you get home. For some people, this is the best solution. There’s a good chance that your family and friends won’t mind celebrating again!

Remember Your Blessings

We all have dreams of what our ideal Christmas should be like – but the reality is that Christmas is Christmas no matter where you are, who you are with, or how it turns out to be. We have to learn to make the best of things – focus on the positives in life. Rather than having regrets about the way things turned out it is much better to find something productive to do with our time and to remember our blessings.

Avoid Gaining Weight During The Holiday Season

How To Avoid Gaining Weight During The Holiday Season

Most people gain weight during the fall and winter months and most of that weight is gained during the holiday season. It makes senses – we are slowing down in our activities outdoors and we are enjoying more indoor fun and celebrations – which usually means we are eating some delicious foods that we only eat this time of year. It’s only natural that we want to fully indulge in the delicacies while we can!

This post is NOT going to ask you to skip holiday events or tell you not to eat your favorite foods during the holidays. However, if you follow the tips in this article you will find that you get to enjoy all the delicious foods you love, without worries about gaining weight – Sort Of!

Holidays don't have to mean extra weight!

Plan Ahead

One of the most important steps in the process is planning ahead. If you know you will be at an event where there will be delicious foods that are going to tempt you – then take precautions. For instance, you could eat a bowl of low-calorie soup before the event. This will help fill you up but it should still leave some room for tasting anything you desire.

In this way you can have a sampling of everything if you like or you can pick one or two of your favorites. Either way, you will feel much less guilty than you would if you had an overflowing plate-full of food.

No Time To Plan

In some cases you may not have to plan ahead far enough to have a bowl of soup before leaving for the event. In that case you may arrive hungry and ready to devour everything that looks edible. Before you begin take the time to slowly drink a full glass of water. This can have a similar effect as the soup. It will help give you that full feeling so you will tend to eat less.

When You Just Can’t Wait

There may be a time when you can’t wait or don’t have access to a glass of water before you begin eating. In that case you should choose your foods wisely. Smaller portions should be added to your plate and you should eat slowly. Remember that the event is really about spending time with people – it’s not about eating. When you do take a bite, make it count – savor the moment, really taste the flavor of every morsel.
Eating slowly aids in digestion and it is a good habit to get into. Drinking water offers countless benefits; so again, this is another excellent habit to incorporate into your everyday life.

The final suggestion relates to activities. Try to force yourself to be a little more active in simple ways in your everyday life. For example – instead of keeping your cell phone with you when you are at home, why not keep it on the countertop or the coffee table. This will require you to walk across the room to retrieve it if it rings. You can do the same thing with the remote to the TV. Incorporating these small measures can make a big difference in the calories you burn each day.

Santa Claus, Indiana: Where Christmas Happens Year Round

Santa Claus, IN is one of those rare places that makes it easy to celebrate the Christmas spirit on a daily basis, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The name of the town seems to say it all. But is the name deceiving? Read this article and you be the judge…

The Location

Santa Claus, Indiana is located in Spencer County, which is in the southwestern part of the state. According to the 2010 census, population was at 2,481. The town is between the Ohio River and Interstate 64.

The History

The town of Santa Claus has a rich history that goes back to the late 1840’s. Originally known as Santa Fe, (pronounced Santa Fee), however, the name was not accepted by the US Postal Service because there was already a city that had that name established with the USPS. For a period of time this place was known as the ‘nameless town’. But after several town meetings and much discussion, it was later decided that the name Santa Claus would be used.

Themed Attractions

Whether your preference is camping, museums, or fun in the sun, Santa Claus, IN can deliver. The town offers a variety of things to do for the entire family. Santa’s Candy Castle includes a candy theme and Santa’s workshop. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is renowned for the world’s longest water coasters. This park is divided into 4 sections where you will find celebrations for Christmas, Thanksgiving, the Fourth of July, and Halloween.

Santa Claus also offers the Santa Claus Museum, Santa’s Stables, and Christmas Lake Golf Course. Plus, it’s home to Lake Rudolph campground & RV Resort and Santa’s Lodge. There really is something for everyone!

More Than A Theme Park

Although many people think of Santa Claus as a great place to visit because of the themed attractions, others know the area is a perfect place to live. Most of the residents live in the gated community called Christmas Lake Village. The place includes 2,500 acres beautifully developed around 3 lakes: Lake Noel, Lake Holly, and of course, Christmas Lake. Street names conjure up thoughts of the holiday season. Holiday Village is another popular neighborhood in the area.

Christmas Lake Village are all named after the Christmas season. Many residents also live in Holiday Village, a subdivision on the north side of town.

Final Thoughts

If you want to enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle of rush hour traffic and your regular routines, why not visit Santa Claus, IN? It’s centrally located and rather easy to get to for most U.S. residents. In fact, it may be ‘on the way’ to your next destination.
